Departmental Tutor In Academic English

Language Centre

The Language Centre, part of Oxford University Department for Continuing Education (OUDCE), is seeking to appoint an Academic English tutor.

About the role

This is a permanent position available at 0.8FTE.

About you

You will hold a first degree and language teaching qualification: a Master’s in a relevant applied field is also desirable. You will be an experienced English for Academic Purposes teacher who thrives on teaching bright and committed learners from a wide range of academic disciplines and cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Experience of teaching in a higher education context is essential.

The post-holder will:

  • Liaise with other Academic English tutors and coordinators, taking a team approach to syllabus, curriculum and programme delivery;
  • Plan and deliver stimulating lessons to enable our learners to make swift progress, incorporating the effective use of technology;
  • Set homework tasks, mark, assess and, as required, examine;
  • Answer student queries, provide advice and guidance, and evaluate learners’ competence for entry requirements.

About us

The Language Centre is the University’s hub for all students and staff who want to improve their language skills in 11 modern languages and Academic English. As well as term-time courses, we run a number of English courses over the summer vacation including a 6-week Pre-sessional course.

Our tutors deliver language teaching in person and online using the Language Centre’s VLE. Work in support of teaching includes contributing to curriculum development, assessment and examination, quality assurance, and professional development, to ensure that the Language Centre’s offering reflects the high standards of excellence of the University of Oxford.
